 キリスト教館の意義とテーマキリスト教館は日本におけるカトリック、プロテスタントのキリスト教諸教会、教派とバチカン市国とが共同して建設した展示館です。これは現代世界において、キリストの福音（よきおとずれ）と、その救いの臨在をあかしすることを目的にしています。またこれは、あらゆる困難を克服して一致しようとしているキリスト教徒の努力を示しています。 展示のテーマは「目と手−人間の発見」です。 「信仰」と「希望」によって眼は人間の尊厳と運命を発見します。手はキリスト教的「愛」によって動かされ、神に祈るために合わされ、人類に奉仕するためにひろげられます。 玄関ホール キリスト教館の人口にはいって右に折れた小さなホールの壁面にある三つの大理石浮彫はこの「信仰」、「希望」、「愛」というキリスト教の基本的な心構えをしょうちょうするものです。これはバチカン市国の出展品で、「信仰」と「愛」はミノ・ダ・フィエゾレ（1430−1481）、「希望」はジョバァンニ・ダルマタ（1440−1510）の作です。 地下展示場 このホールからジグザグの階段をおりて、ローマ帝国時代キリスト信者が迫害をさけて集まった所、カタコンブのような地下展示場に入ります。音と光でにぎわっている外部から解放されたこの場所には、まず一連の写真が展示されていて、豊かな社会の中における苦悩と貧困と、これに奉仕しようとするキリスト者の努力が示されています。次に眼に映るのは、人間の罪によってざくろのように割れた「世界の破れをになうキリスト」像です。キリストは十字架につけられ死にましたが、三日めによみがえり、人類の死を亡ぼし、生命を回復しました。 この右手の壁の前に素朴な「聖母子」木彫像があります。これは、キリストが「聖霊によりやどり、おとめマリアより生まれた」というキリスト教の基本信条をあらわすものです。 これよりも先に訪問者の眼はラアエル原画にもとずく三つのタペストリー（壁かけ）に奪われているかもしれません。右手のものは「不思議な漁り」で教会の宣教活動を意味しています。中央のものは、「テベリア湖畔における復活のキリストの出現」で、シモン、ペトロに天国の鍵が与えられ、かれに信者の群が委託される光景です。左手のものは「パウロのアテネにおける説教」で、その説教のテーマは、アテネの人々がおがんでいる「知られざる神」が天地万物を造り、キリストを復活させた方であるというものです。 中央のタペストリの両側には、ジョバンニ・ベルニーニ作のろうそく立てが四つ飾られています。ろうそくの火は、キリストはこの夜のやみを照らす光であり、この地上をもえ立たせる愛であること、またこれにあやからなければならないキリスト信者の信仰生活を象徴するものです。タペストリー三点とろうそく立て四つは、いずれもバチカン市国から出展されたものです。 地下展示場の左の隅にノアのブロンズ像が展示されています。神は人類の罪を怒って地上に大洪水をおこし人類をほろぼされましたが、ノアは義人でしたから、家族と共に箱舟にはいり救われました。 地上展示場 地下から階段を上って地上に出ますと、そこは「聖なる空間」です。この場所はキリスト教の三つの伝統的なシンボル、すなわち神のみことば（聖書）のテーブル、主のばんさん（パン皿とさかずき）のテーブル、人の神への賛美応答（竹のパイプオルガン−ヤマハ日本楽器、ドイツ・クライス社共同製作）によって囲まれています。 ここで毎日正午から平和の祈りのつどいがおこなわれ、カトリックもプロテスタントも、またキリスト教徒でない人々も参加できる形式で世界の平和のために祈りがささげられます。また日曜日には、カトリック・ミサが午前10時と午後5時から行なわれています。 キリスト教館を訪れた方々はこの「聖なる空間」でしばらく腰をかけ、沈黙のうちに静かな展示の意味を考え、あるいはここで行なわれるパイプオルガンの演奏、演劇を味わい、平和の祈りあるいはミサ以外の他の種々な簾合に参加して、キリスト教が現代他界に対しておこなう呼びかけを感じとっていただきたいものです。 |

 The Christian Pavilion is, jointly sponsored by Catholic and Protestant
Christians in Japan and by the Holy See. Its aim is to give witness to
the Gospel of Christ and His saving Presence in the world, and to signify
real ecumenic work. The theme of the Pavilion is EYES AND HANDS; EYES discovering
through Faith and Hope man's dignity and destiny; HANDS testifying to the
mission of praying for and serving humanity through Christian Love. In
the Entrance Hall of the Pavilion there are three marble sculptures which
symbolize this theme, "Faith" and "Charity" by Mino
da Fiesole (1430-1481) and "Hope" by John Dalmata (1440-1510?),
sent from the Vatican.The theme is further illustrated by the structure of the Pavilion and by its displays. In the catacomb-like subterranean space, the visitor feels himself liberated from the colorful ambience of the Exposition. Panel photographs reveal the pain and conflict in an affluent society and the Christianity's effort to serve the mankind. The central sculpture invites reflection on the mystery of the cross and the responsibility all men have to work for peace and justice. In front of the right wall a wooden sculpture of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus is exhibited. This represents one of the articles of the Apostolic Creed: "conceived through the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary." Three Raphael Tapestries with biblical motifs graciously lent by Pope Paul VI (together with the precious candlesticks of G. Bernini) show "Miraculous Draught of Fishes, symbolic of the missionary activity of the Church; Christ giving the keys of the kingdom to Peter and entrusting him with His flock; Paul preaching to the Athenians on the unknown God who raised Christ to life. In the left side corner there is a bronze sculpture of Noah, a man of Faith who prefigures the baptized Christian. The upper hall is the place of "Holy Emptiness." It is adorned with three symbols of the Christian faith:The Word of God (Bible); the table of the Lord's Supper (Eucharist); and the World's response and praise to God (bamboo organ). Ecumenical prayer services for the World peace are held here at noon; Catholic Mass on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Here also are given musical and dramatic performances, here meetings of various kinds are held. Visitors are invited to share in these programs and to experience the Pavilion's dynamic witness. United with our brethren throughout the world, and grateful for their help, the Christians of Japan pray that the Pavilion may enrich all our visitors with the Christian hope that does not deceive (Romans 5:5). |
